Sarkar and Nelson debate at the University of Texas-Austin, 9 March 2006

Sahotra Sarkar has the information posted at his blog here [scroll down].

This debate will be interesting for a couple of reasons:

1. Sahotra and I had the same dissertation advisor, Bill Wimsatt. Bill will be serving as the debate moderator. This is a bit like having your dad supervise a boxing match between you and your brother in the back yard. Now, while Bill is likely to agree with Sahotra philosophically and scientifically, he and I have also logged a lot of time in discussion about the role of theology in evolutionary reasoning, the structure of evolutionary theory, evo-devo, epistemology, you name it. Indeed, Sahotra was present himself at some of those discussions. So I'm looking forward to having a moderator who knows my mind (and heart) about as well as anyone.

2. Sahotra and I agree already about several aspects of the design debate.

I won't spoil the fun for those who might show up in Austin in two weeks to find out where Sahotra and I agree. But let's just say, I think he and I will quickly be able to find the real issue separating us, and not be distracted by a lot of irrelevant side matters.

I guess this means I have finally to finish my write-up of Sahotra's U of C lectures about ID, delivered one year ago (ouch) to the Big Problems program in the Franke Humanities Institute. Is any mammal on Earth slower than me? Was that just a three-toed sloth passing me on the interstate?
